Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson has been indefinitely suspended by A&E for remarks made during an interview with GQ.
This fiasco is less about Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson’s opinion surrounding the LGBT world and more about crisis management by A&E. A&E had no choice but to suspend Robertson. A&E chose to take on a show that’s draw was based on character personality. When doing this, they assumed a risk and edits can’t be made in the real world. TV networks are held hostage to their characters but should have better foresight as to potential risks that may arise from “off-screen” behaviors.
Those [i.e. Sarah Palin] upset by the suspension cited freedom of speech violations. A&E executives have in no way prohibited Robertson’s freedom of speech, they have just chosen not to associate themselves with such controversial rhetoric.
Some Robertson supporters even go so far as to say his suspension infringes on his freedom of religion. A&E’s suspension has no qualities of infringement. In fact, they have not prohibited Robertson from preaching or practicing his Bible thumping; they are just ensuring that they are not the platform from which he does either. A&E is protecting their interests in a way that has no impact on any of the Duck Dynasty leader’s rights and that is simply a strategic public relations strategy.
A&E has appropriately released a statement making it clear to their viewers that the A&E network does not subscribe to the beliefs of their actors nor will they tolerate any comments that may be offensive to certain individuals or groups. I imagine A&E will move forward with terminating Robertson’s contract. He is too great of a risk for them to keep their ties.
Robertson, I am sure, is currently being solicited by hundreds of PR professionals and frankly should have been under the guidance of one from the start of the show. Obtaining a lawyer may not be a bad idea either.
If you are a fan of the show, prepare for a change. I would have to believe that A&E will be tightening the reigns.
